PERSONALITY: Umeda is a very selfish and self-centered person, and has been described as egomaniacal as well. He's also very confident and exceptionally smart; not a surprise that he's a doctor. He's cold and demanding most of the time, especially with his patients, but deep down he's surprisingly kind and concerned. He also does his best to watch over the people he cares for, and despite his very vocal complaints about pretty much everything he's ever asked to do, he's never let anyone down when it matters. As the school physician, he often has to act as both doctor and guidance counselor, listening to students' problems as well as patching them up after fights or injuries. Since he likes to keep up the ficticious front of being an uncaring bastard, he usually just gives the appearance of listening to his students, but most people would say that he doesn't really seem to care about their problems. In reality, he's very concerned with students who have legitimate problems, and he advises them with real knowledge and effort. Umeda cares deeply for the boys he treats and he wants to help them, even if he also tends to intimidate them into continuing his little charade. Seniors especially come to him for advice and a sympathetic ear as their graduation approaches. The pressure on the senior students at Osaka High is immense, and when they start to freak out they run to Umeda, who does his best to assuage their fears and stress. He also acts as Mizuki's best friend, more or less, and listens to her trials and tribulations on a daily basis, patiently allowing her to unburden herself and offering advice when asked.

He's generally rough when he treats students for physical injuries, whether they got the injuries legitimately or in a less honest way, often berating them and telling them to shut up when the boys complain that something hurts. Umeda does this, most likely, for two reasons; to keep up his image of an uncaring bastard, and because he doesn't like to listen to the student's complaints. He is, however, a very skilled medical doctor, and he cares about whether the boys are healthy or not. If someone comes to him with false complaints, however, he has no time for that. Umeda has no sympathy for someone who lies and tries to take advantage of him, and he does his best to discourage them with sarcasm or even abuse. He's found that such treatment tends to warn off those students who would try to take advantage of him in the future as well.

Umeda is quite practical and brusque when dealing with people, whether professional or personal, and he almost always does only the absolute minimum he can get away with in any situation. He's rather lazy and it isn't unusual for him to catch a nap at work, if he doesn't have patients or paperwork he absolutely has to take care of. He's somewhat vain, taking care with his looks and dressing in haute coture when not in his school garb of a suit under his lab coat, and it's obvious he likes the finer things in life. How he can afford to dress so extravagantly isn't really clear, since a school doctor can't realistically make that much, but it's possible that he has family money to draw on as well as his salary. His parents live in a very large house complex and his older sister is also reasonably wealthy, so it stands to reason that he might have something like a trust fund.

His family is really the only place where he seems to have any sort of real soft spot. That's not to say he doesn't care about the Osaka students, particularly Mizuki, but it's clear that she's an exception, not the rule. Umeda has two sisters, Io is older, and Rio is younger. The relationship Umeda has with his younger sister Rio is probably the most normal and healthy one he has with anyone, period. In a flashback chapter, we see him interacting with a very young Rio, and from both their attitudes it's clear that they get along just fine. Unlike with Io, he doesn't seem to have any trouble spending time with his younger sister, although at times Rio can act in a very Io-like fashion. Umeda is very protective of Rio, even going so far as to threaten the Osaka students against trying to date her. When it's revealed that Rio is his younger sister, Umeda makes it crystal clear that if any of the boys try to hit on her, they probably won't survive the attempt. He always complains about helping anyone, but if Rio needs something, he doesn't put up any real fight, unlike when Io demandsasks things of him.

His older sister Io, however, terrifies him. As a child she used to dress him as a girl, among other things, and in his adulthood she calls on him whenever she has something for him to do. If he has the chance, Umeda just runs away when he knows she's coming, or if that fails, he agrees to do whatever she wants and then slithers out, making Mizuki and friends take his place. Io isn't above resorting to physical violence to intimidate Umeda into doing what she wants when her general presence isn't enough to suffice. She also has no compunctions against "punishing" him for the snide or sarcastic little comments he tends to make about her, apparently his only attempts at trying to speak up for himself. She usually kicks, hits or chokes him when she deems it necessary, and it's clear that Umeda is too much of a coward around her to genuinely stand up for himself; he doesn't seem to have a problem being forceful with anyone but Io. Umeda also, just in general, doesn't like to spend time with women. He's even said aloud that his reluctance to spend time with women probably stems from the treatment he receives from Io.

That said, Mizuki is another person he has a reasonably healthy relationship with. Although he often seems to act as her therapist, it's clear he cares about her and is actually concerned about her doing well. He's one of a handful of people who know for certain that Mizuki is a girl and currently masquerading as a boy in the all-boy Osaka High, and like everyone else that knows, he keeps it a secret. On an almost daily basis he gets to re-live all of Mizuki's various and crazy exploits, more often than not making him stare in consternation at her complete obliviousness, or laugh at the fact that other people have to suffer for her actions. He treats her much like he does Rio actually, although he's not quite as overprotective with Mizuki. A prefect example of their relationship is after the class trip. Mizuki comes for her usual visit and produces a very weird ceramic owl before leaving, presenting it to Umeda. He asks what it's for and she tells him that it's a souviner from the trip. He reminds her that he was actually on the trip with Mizuki, and she just smiles and tells him she wanted him to have a momento. Umeda sets the owl on his desk, despite the fact that he clearly doesn't like it, and that he really thinks it's a silly.

In the flashback chapter where we see a high school-age Umeda, we also see more of the way he was before he developed that abrasive and harsh shell. His friends come to him for academic help and he demands money for his notes, and is not in the least swayed by their lack of funds, but in the end he somehow ends up helping them anyway. He also gets tricked into being the vice president for the school festival and complains quite loudly about it, but he doesn't shirk the duties fallen on his shoulders. In fact, he does a really good job, impressing everyone with his work ethic and leadership abilities, mostly because he'd previously done his best to avoid any sort of real work. These same qualities remain with him into the present day, they just tend to be a lot harder to spot.

As far as his personal life goes, Umeda is gay and not afraid to let the world know it. He's also in love with someone he met at Osaka back when he was still a student there. Over the course of several months, while coordinating for the school festival, Umeda slowly realizes that he's falling in love Ryoichi, a boy he'd never even spoken to before the festival threw them together. Even in high school Umeda knows that he likes boys, although only one of his friends is aware of where his preferences lie, but there's no definitive evidence that Ryoichi is gay either in high school or later in life. In the comic, they never show them to do more than kiss, and Umeda specifically states, "We never talked about what happened that day. That was a secret the two of us would share forever." They actually kissed on two separate occassions, although Umeda sums the experiences up into a single day for some reason. It's implied that the two instances of kissing are the only sexual encounters they share, however, it's possible that there might have been more in the intervening twelve years. Umeda's most treasured possession is actually a tiny bottle of cologne that Ryoichi gave him for one of his birthdays, which means the two have kept up contact even after high school.

Interestingly, although Umeda doesn't hesitate to fess up to liking men and very willingly admits to being in love with Ryoichi (who treats him like crap and doesn't give any indication he returns Umeda's affections), he sleeps with people all the time. When Mizuki called him on that fact, he explained that he's a very affectionate person, and that his affection takes a sexual turn when he's with someone he cares about. He doesn't see sleeping with someone as any sort of betrayal of his feelings for Ryoichi, most likely because the man doesn't seem to care one way or another. It would be stupid to stop his life and live like a monk, waiting for a man who probably won't ever return his feelings. It's also good to note that Umeda has no interest whatsoever in younger men. Although Mizuki happens upon some fishy-looking scenes between Umeda and students, more than once, both the students and Umeda are adamant that there's nothing going on. He states flat out that he has no interest in the students at Osaka after Mizuki overhears a tearful confession. In fact, he goes on to say that most of the boys at Osaka aren't like he was at that age and don't know what they want, and that if the boy had been serious, he wouldn't have given up so easily.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Umeda is very human and very fallible. He is also a trained, educated and licensed physician. He's currently plying his trade at Osaka High, treating the ailments and maladies of teenage boys. He's not generally very gentle, but he is very, very capable. So, no superpowers, but he can patch just about anyone up from most injuries, if you don't mind the verbal abuse and rough treatment!

SAMPLES:

First Person Sample:

[Umeda glared into the mirror, bristling. He was standing in the bathroom, one hand braced on the sink and the other planted on his hip, his button-down shirt hanging open to show his pale chest. His pants were hanging low off his hips, but anything else lower was cut off from view by the sink. He was definitely not happy.]

So tell me children. Just why the hell am I standing in a bathroom, talking at a mirror, in a city that's gone insane with sex? I like a good lay as much as the next man, but what the hell gives? This is crazy! What do you people expect me to do here? I'm a damned doctor, not a nymphomaniac!

[He straightened up and shoved the hand that had been on the sink through his hair. His glasses flashed in the light for a moment before he let his hand fall to his side. He's not the type to keep up high levels of emotion for protracted periods. There's clearly still tension in his body, and his voice is exasperated, but the explosive anger has been spent.]

Well, I suppose the lack of familiar faces is sort of a good thing. I'm not sure I'd want anyone back home to know where I was right now. So, down to business. Where do I find the medical center, and which way is the nearest bar?

Third Person Sample:

Umeda strolled down the sidewalk, hands in the pockets of his labcoat. It was force of habit that saw him pulling it on every morning, that and the fact that someone might see him in it and stop for a chat. Hey, doctors were still considered quite the catch, weren't they? If someone happened to want the status of having a doctor for a partner, who was he to deny them? Besides, it was a conversation starter, at least in theory. So far, he hadn't had any takers.

He paused, taking a deep drag on the cigarette that dangled from his lips. He blew the smoke out in a thin stream, looking at his surroundings with the cigarette now held in his right hand. The city was sort of beautiful, in a fucked-up way. It was kind of nice to have a vacation from Osaka High, especially with Mizuki gone and everyone graduated. It just wasn't the same there, and hadn't been, since that crazy crossdresser left. Umeda sighed and took another drag. How lame was he? Here he was in a city that glorified one night stands and every kink known to man, and he was depressed that those stupid kids weren't around to poke fun at. Lame.

Umeda took one last drag before dropping the cigarette and crushing it under his heel. He took off walking again, shoving his hands deep in his lab coat pockets. No better way to forget about ridiculous children than to find someone to fuck. He might as well start sampling the things the city had to offer.
